Babies are made to be carried. It’s practical, it makes life easier, and it’s brilliant for their development.
Human babies are what anthropologists call “semi-clinging young” - just like our primate cousins. We evolved from animals whose babies were born expecting to be held close, to cling to fur, and to move through the world in constant contact with their caregiver. Modern life has changed a lot, but our babies haven’t. A good carrier simply replaces the monkey fur.
Babywearing is simple: it’s carrying your baby in a way that keeps both of you secure, comfortable, and close. That closeness really matters. Newborns thrive when they feel safe in your arms, and you get to move, breathe, make a cup of tea or get out for a walk - all while keeping your baby cuddled right next to you.
Why babywearing?
Connection and comfort: Being close helps babies feel calm and secure.
Hands-free freedom: Everyday life becomes easier - especially with stairs, public transport, or short trips where prams are a faff.
Support for healthy development: The right carrier supports your baby’s spine and hips while helping you maintain good posture too.
It just feels good: Your baby is reassured, you feel more confident, and life flows a little more smoothly.

How do I choose a baby carrier?
The best way to find the right carrier is to try a few (or if you don’t want to, just get an Izmi - we know we’re a bit biased, but we’ve tried hundreds and we’re genuine experts in carrier design, so it really is one of the best around).
Every body, baby, and family is different - so what feels amazing for one person might feel awkward for another. Carriers are a bit like shoes: they come in different shapes, fits, and styles, and comfort is completely personal. You’ll only really know what suits you by trying them on. And just like shoes, most parents end up with more than one!
That’s why we always recommend starting with your local sling library or carrying consultant. They’re brilliant community resources where you can try different brands, get expert help with fitting, and find what feels best for you and your baby. You can find your nearest sling library or Izmi stockist on our Where to Try Izmi page.
When you’re exploring your options, think about:
-
Comfort: You and your baby should both feel supported. The carrier should hug your baby’s weight into your centre, not pull on your shoulders or back.
-
Ease of use: Some carriers are simpler to put on than others. Choose one that fits easily into your everyday life.
-
Adjustability: Babies grow fast - and your body will change too. A carrier that adjusts easily will last longer and stay comfy.
-
Fabric and climate: If you get hot easily, or plan to use your carrier in warm weather, a lightweight, breathable fabric makes a big difference.
Age and stage: Some carriers suit newborns best, while others are designed for toddlers or bigger kids.
All Izmi carriers are designed to be ergonomic, soft, and adaptable - supporting you both from those first newborn cuddles through to the wriggly toddler years.

Getting started
A few tips to help you feel confident right away:
-
Start when your baby is well fed and reasonably content. Easier said than done, we know.
-
Hold them close enough to kiss the top of their head.
-
Make sure they’re upright, with their face visible and their chin well clear of their chest.
-
The carrier should feel snug, supporting your baby’s back and keeping their body gently tucked in.
-
Take things gently: short carries to begin with, just around the house or out for a coffee.
And remember - babies don’t usually love transitions. Some wiggling, fussing, or even crying while they’re being put into the carrier is completely normal. It doesn’t mean they dislike being carried. It just means they’re adjusting. You can read more about this in our Why Babies Cry in Their Sling blog.
We offer free, friendly fit checks via WhatsApp with every Izmi purchase. No pressure, no judgement - just real support from real experts.
Enjoy the snuggles
You won’t spoil your baby by holding them close. You’re giving them exactly what they need to feel secure in the world. One day they’ll wriggle down and run off across the playground - but for now, soak it in.
