The school run with a baby or toddler: how to make mornings easier

The school run with a baby or toddler: how to make mornings easier

Uniform? ✓
Book bag? ✓
Water bottle? ✓
PE kit? ✓
Approximately 47 other things, all with name tags? ✓

And then there's the little sibling who isn't going to school at all, but somehow has to come along for every drop-off and pick-up.

The school run can feel like a military operation at the best of times. Add a baby who needs feeding, a toddler who's determined to walk in the opposite direction, or a preschooler whose legs have suddenly stopped working halfway home, and simply getting everyone through the school gates on time can feel like a day's work all before 9am.

Whether you're doing the school run for the first time this September or you've been at it for years, a few small changes can make getting everyone out of the house - and back again - that bit easier.

1. Get as much as you can ready the night before

It's obvious advice, but there's a reason everyone gives it. Put book bags by the door, fill water bottles, find the shoes and check whether tomorrow is inexplicably wear something green and bring an empty cereal box day before everyone is trying to leave the house.

If you're taking a baby too, having your own essentials ready can make just as much difference. Keeping nappies, wipes, muslins and everything else you regularly need in one bag means one less mental checklist to work through in the morning.

2. Give yourself fewer things to push, carry and hold

School gates are busy places. There are roads to cross, scooters to retrieve, bags to carry and older kids who suddenly have seventeen extremely important things to tell you at once.

For lots of families, using a baby carrier for the school run is a really simple way to make things easier. Your baby or toddler stays close to you and your hands are free for holding your big kid's hand, carrying their things or navigating a crowded playground.

For shorter journeys, it can also be much easier than getting a pushchair in and out, especially if your route involves steps, narrow pavements or a school entrance packed with children, parents, bikes and everything else at 8.45am.

3. Let toddlers walk when it works - and have a backup for when it doesn't

Toddlers are not exactly known for their consistency. The child who happily walked the whole way yesterday may make it twelve metres today before deciding they're absolutely finished.

If your younger child wants to walk some of the school run, taking a lightweight carrier means you don't have to choose. They can walk when there's time and it's safe to do so, and you've still got an easy way to carry them when little legs get tired - or when you just really need everyone to keep moving.

4. Remember that school-age children can still need carrying

Starting school doesn't necessarily mean a child has finished needing to be carried.

Some children tire easily on longer journeys. Others need the reassurance and regulation that comes from being close to a parent. For disabled and neurodivergent children, walking independently may not always be possible or safe.

For families who need it, a carrier designed specifically for bigger children can give you another option. The Izmi Adventure Carrier can comfortably carry bigger kids up to 32 kg, giving parents a hands-free alternative for school runs, days out and everyday journeys.

Cessa uses the Izmi Adventure Carrier with her autistic daughter Ada, who sometimes refuses to walk outdoors and at other times can run off without any awareness of danger. Read Ada's story and find out how carrying helps her family keep her safe, calm and close.

5. Lower the bar for what counts as a successful school run

Nobody is awarding marks for arriving at the gate with beautifully brushed hair, an immaculate kitchen behind you and children who haven't argued once.

They got there. You got there. Ideally everybody has shoes on.

That's enough.

Which Izmi carrier is best for the school run?

That depends on who you're carrying.

For babies and smaller toddlers, the Izmi Baby Carrier and Izmi Breeze Baby Carrier give you a lightweight, hands-free alternative to taking the pushchair, without adding lots of bulk to an already busy morning.

For toddlers and bigger children, the Izmi Adventure Carrier and Izmi Breeze Adventure Carrier give you more room as they grow, with support for children up to 32 kg.

If you're not sure which Izmi will suit you and your child, take our 1-minute carrier quiz and we'll help you find the right one.
