Why do some babies get red marks behind their knees in a wrap or carrier?
Some babies have very sensitive skin and can occasionally develop redness or irritation in areas where fabric sits against the skin, particularly in warm weather or during longer periods of carrying.
This is most commonly caused by a combination of heat, moisture and friction, rather than by the wrap or carrier fabric itself. Similar redness can occur under nappies, socks or other close-fitting clothing, especially during hot weather.
All Izmi fabrics and dyes are tested to meet strict safety standards and are carefully selected to be gentle against babies' skin. However, even very soft fabrics can occasionally contribute to rubbing or heat build-up when in prolonged contact with sensitive skin.
Redness behind the knees is more commonly reported when using stretchy wraps than structured carriers. This is simply because stretchy wraps use three layers of fabric to provide support and can therefore create more warmth around the backs of the knees, particularly in hot weather or when carrying for extended periods.
To help minimise the risk of irritation:
-
Ensure your wrap or carrier is fitted correctly. Your baby's weight should be supported through their bottom and seat rather than resting heavily on the backs of the knees or thighs.
-
Dress your baby in lightweight, breathable clothing, such as soft cotton or linen trousers that cover the backs of the knees.
-
Check that the fabric is smooth and evenly spread, without folds or bunching that could increase pressure or friction.
-
In very hot weather, some parents find it helpful to place a large muslin, folded or rolled into a soft pad, inside the carrier underneath their baby's thighs. This can provide an extra layer of cushioning and help reduce friction in sensitive areas.
-
Take regular breaks if carrying for long periods in hot conditions.
If you notice any redness or irritation, stop using the wrap or carrier until the skin has recovered. If irritation persists or you have concerns about your baby's skin, we recommend seeking advice from a healthcare professional.
If you'd like help checking the fit of your wrap or carrier, the Izmi team is always happy to provide a free fit check and personalised carrying support.
